Math:

Chapter 1 focuses on Place Value, Addition, and Subtraction to One Million:

  • Model the 10-1 relationship among place-value positions in the base-ten number system.
  • Read and write whole numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form.
  • Compare and order whole numbers based on the values of the digits in each number.
  • Read a whole num er to any place.
  • Rename whole numbers by regrouping.
  • Add whole numbers and determine whether solutions to addition problems are reasonable.
  • Subtract whole numbers and determine whether solutions to subtraction problems are reasonable.
  • Use the strategy draw a diagram to solve comparison problems with addition and subtraction.

Unit 1:

What can we discover from new places and people?

Reading

  • Students will be able to fully comprehend and discuss individually and within goops all aspects of the designated story.
  • Students will readily identify the main idea and plot of a story.
  • Students will be able to identify characteristics and traits of characters.
  • Students will be able to compare characters with in the story using a graphic organizer.
  • Students will be able to summarize and retell a story in sequential order.
  • Students will be able to determine the author’s purpose for writing a story.
  • Students will begin to understand the elements of a story such as a character, setting and plot and incorporate same into a writing piece.

Writing/Grammar/Vocabulary

  • Students will be able to identify base words, suffixes, and prefixes.
  • Students will be able to identify sentence types.
  • Students will be able to identify sentence types.
  • Students will be able to identify simple and complete subjects and predicates.
  • Students will be able to write and identify clauses, complex and compound sentences.
  • Students will be able to write a descriptive and narrative essay, including brainstorming, outline, editing and publishing.
  • Students will be able to incorporate new vocabulary words into everyday life.

Science

  • Students will understand how plants, animals and their environment are interdependent.  
  • Students will research using iPads, various animals, their habitat, their food source, behaviors, their reproductive cycle and their means of protection.

Social Studies

  • Students will understand the diverse geography of New York State.  
  • Students will read and study the Native American Groups and their environment and how they developed unique cultures.
  • Students will research and write a report comparing how the first inhabitants of New York lived vs. how they we live today.

Religion

In Unit 1 your child will grow as a disciple of Jesus by:

  • learning that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life who teaches us how to live
  • following Jesus by living the Beatitudes, and by helping the Kingdom of God to spread
  • choosing to love God and others and to avoid sin
  • forming a good conscience, and learning to do an examination of conscience to help make good choices
  • celebrating the Sacarament of Penance and Reconciliation to receive God’s forgiveness
